- I am a freelance software engineer, most recently working on bioinformatics projects (GATK, Scanpy) and related SciPy projects (UMAP, pynndescent).
- I worked for Cloudera from its founding in 2008 until 2018.
- I am the author of Hadoop: The Definitive Guide, published by O'Reilly.
- I was a committer on Apache Hadoop, a member of the Hadoop Project Management Committee, and an Apache Member.
- I founded the Apache Whirr project (now retired), for running distributed systems in the cloud.
- I live in the Brecon Beacons in Wales with my family, where we moved to in 2007 from London. From 2009 to 2012 we lived in San Francisco.
- I give occasional technical talks on distributed computing and related topics.
- I've written lots of technical articles over the years. I used to write a Java blog over at java.net. More recently, I've written on Cloudera's blog.
